GIFT OF SIGHT
Jesus Gives Sight to the Man Born Blind
John 9:1-41

“When it comes to human dignity, we cannot make compromises.”
– Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany, 2005
The idea of acceptance in this chapter of the Gospel stood out to Swanson. The blind man is shunned by others, as if his handicap was his fault, or a punishment for his family. Jesus gives sight to the blind man, so that he may see life for the first time, and He gives insight to those around him. Before, the people did not relate to the blind man and saw him as inferior, but they learned that he was their equal. Racism, sexism, economic status, insecurity, and fear can lead us to search for differences between each other. We need to remember that we are all part of the human family and share only one Earth, our common home.

This print is available on its own, or as set of the three prints in the Gift Triptych Suite. Because Swanson printed giclee editions in smaller batches, only those printed during his lifetime are signed by the artist. The remaining prints from the edition are made using the same image he created and approved, but with his signature printed where he would have signed them.
