Jesus calls to his Friend, Lazarus, to Come Out of the Tomb
John 11:1-54

“Every life is sacred, every human person is
endowed with an inalienable dignity, and society can only benefit
from the rehabilitation of those convicted of crimes.”
– Pope Francis, Speech given to the United States Congress, Sept. 24, 2015

GIFT OF LIFE is depicts the Raising of Lazarus from the Tomb and the unbinding of his wrappings.

Lazarus’s story is one of resurrection; he is freed from the bonds of death. While only God can give life, we are also brought back to life when we take away the stone from the tombs that lock us in. We can be free from the boundaries and limitations which allow much harm to our society and planet. We can help others out of the tombs of greed and hatred.

Prisoners returning to society from physical incarceration can be rehabilitated, too. The disadvantages they face in recreating their lives are not necessary. Since 1973, 151 people have been released from death row because of wrongful convictions. I wonder how many more would have been exonerated. with adequate legal representation. We can break the death bindings of fear and hostility that hold us back in accepting others, seek forgiveness and to forgive, and see life anew.

Because Swanson printed giclee editions in smaller batches, only those printed during his lifetime are signed by the artist. The remaining prints from the edition are made using the same image he created and approved, but with his signature printed where he would have signed them.
