Artist’s Notes
THE DEPOSITION is based on a sketch I did in the late 1970s, from Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio’s 16th Century painting, The Entombment of Christ.
I developed the sketch into a gestural painting throughout the end of 2011, and continued to work on the piece through 2013 to create a second variation of the artwork. In my paintings, I slowly added colors and rough suggested shapes to indicate movement and lamentation.
As I added to the figures, I tried to give them a certain character, and a sense of what brings them together in tragedy.
