Artist’s Notes
This serigraph is based on a small earlier water-media painting, finished in 1985. I used three larger panels and six smaller panels to capture the narrative. The highlights of the story are paired with the text to help people to understand it better. I drew the text with elaborate calligraphy so that it became part of the decorations that surrounds the borders, with the small symbols from Joseph’s dreams, like the sheaves of wheat, the stars and the sun, the grapes, and the chalice.

To make the serigraph stand out, with a painted-look, I layered transparent and opaque colored inks. This was a technique I would continue to develop, and which became essential in my later serigraphs.

STORY OF JOSEPH is a journey of maturing. In the beginning of the story, Joseph’s character is in formation, he is not ready for the blessings given him. Instead of putting his powerful dreams to use, he boasts about them, angering his brothers.

Joseph’s brothers, envious that he is their father’s favorite, throw Joseph into an empty well. After being enslaved and imprisoned Joseph interprets the dreams of Pharaoh who vests him with great power. Finally, after many years of suffering, Joseph has compassion and is able to receive his brothers with forgiveness. His brothers are amazed when he reveals his great power in the Kingdom.

This story moves me in understanding our journey in life. Joseph had so much to learn, and had to suffer so much to mature. And it also speaks to us about forgiveness, especially among families.
