Description

Artist Notes:

When I lived in London, I found the popularity of newsstands an enjoyable facet of daily life. They were everywhere. To pass the time on their daily commutes and journeys, people had access to news and entertainment from all over Europe. Buying periodicals was a daily ritual, that unified all travelers.

For this artwork, I had created a number of drawings of readers and vendors. In the original 1979 water-media painting, I collaged stamps onto the painting, and painted on them to create the different covers for the periodicals. In 2008, experimenting with the new printing process, I adapted my painting as a giclee edition.

Because Swanson printed giclee editions in smaller batches, only those printed during his lifetime are signed by the artist. The remaining prints from the edition are made using the same image he created and approved, but with his signature printed where he would have signed them.
