Artist’s Notes

When I envision clowns, I think of them as special visitors who could bring laughter and fun into our hearts. Dressed in ornate and colorful clothes, containing every color in the rainbow, they heal us with laughter, as we are delighted by their foolish acts. Through their performances, we are led to transformation, to treat all with respect, and to serve in our community.

This clown is dressed in a beautiful quilted blouse, striped pantaloons, an ornate collar, and a pointed hat with a blue pompom, ready for his performance. His pets are also dressed in matching hats and collars for the stage. He gently pets his dogs as the group anticipates going out into the ring.

AMAZING DOG TRIO- Giclee Printing
In January, 2015, the Studio of John August Swanson re-acquired Swanson’s 1987 Multi-Media (Watercolor and Metallic paints) painting, AMAZING DOG TRIO. The Studio scanned the 12″ x 9″ painting at 1300 DPI on February 2, 2015. Swanson began working with the image to adapt it as a giclee print edition, first changing the the dimensions to 17.5″ x 12″, to match other artworks in his series of Clowns: STAR CLOWN, PAPAGENO, GOOSE WITH THE GOLDEN EGG, and CRIMSON CLOWN.
Swanson tried new ideas to enhance the artwork: the size of the figure of the clown was reduced to increase it’s similarity to the other artworks in the clown series; Swanson hand painted a new rug and curtains, and layers of stippling, which were scanned and added to the digital artwork. Two versions were completed, one with a starburst pattern behind the clown, and one without. These proofs were printed, and Swanson chose the version without the starburst experiment. Additional color changes were completed, proofs were printed and inspected, and shadows and highlights were added to the piece. On September 23, 2015, the final giclee print file was completed and approved by John August Swanson; this is the file Kolibri Art Studio in Torrance, CA uses to print the edition. On October 2, 2015, the first five giclee prints from the edition were inspected, approved, and signed by John August Swanson.

AMAZING DOG TRIO – Thoughts and Reflections
EE Cummings
1894-1962

At the very thought of “circus”
a swarm of long-imprisoned desires breaks jail.
Armed with beauty and demanding justice
and everywhere threatening us with curiosity
and spring and childhood,
this mob of forgotten wishes
begins to storm the supposedly impregnable fortifications of our present.

Circus performers can encourage us to confront our most deeply felt anxieties and inhibitions:
our fears of being laughed at, of taking risks, and trying new things.
